It is what she calls a “micro-moment of positivity resonance.” She means that love is a connection, characterized by a flood of positive emotions, which you share with another person—any other person—whom you happen to connect with in the course of your day. You can experience these micro-moments with your romantic partner, child, or close friend. But you can also fall in love, however momentarily, with less likely candidates, like a stranger on the street, a colleague at work, or an attendant at a grocery store. Louis Armstrong put it best in “It’s a Wonderful World” when he sang, “I see friends shaking hands, sayin ‘how do you do?’ / They’re really sayin’, ‘I love you.’”

When do we stop seeing the animal, and start seeing ourselves?

Photographer Tim Flach challenges you with that question, in his new book More Than Human. Every single one of his photos, from scary bats to naked chickens, is breathtaking.

We are becoming aware of more examples of animal intelligence, from the language of whales to the self-awareness and empathy of the great apes. Whereas one’s emotional response to what appears to be a ponderous panda used to be thought of as folly, we are now able to appreciate a wider spectrum of animal thought and processing.

It does not mean that there is deep thought in those eyes, but it blurs the lines of where our stare stops and theirs begins. There is something. What? Who knows?

We would do well to remind ourselves not where animals are like us, but perhaps where we are like them. These photos do that for me.

You could count on ten years or so of real adulthood, right? There was no planning for retirement. There was no planning for a career. There was no planning. No time for planning. No time for a future. But then the life spans started getting longer, and the people started having more and more future, and so they spent more time thinking about it. About the future. And now life has become the future. Every moment of your life is lived for the future- you go to high school so you can go to college so you can get a good job so you can get a nice house so you can afford to send your kids to college so they can get a good job so they can get a nice house so they can afford to send their kids to college.”

- John Green (via omgtiffanywtf.tumblr.com)

"You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you’ll escape it one day, and..."

“You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you’ll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it.
Reddit’s mind-blowing sentences

So, a while back I saw a Reddit thread about mind-blowing sentences and what struck me was how many of the best had foundations in scientific disciplines, from human conciousness to genetics. Seeing these sentences, I couldn’t help but put together a nice album that I knew us Tumblrs would love.

In case the hydrogen one has you stumped, as reddit user ‘Propionate’ put it:

“Really hot plasma, Hydrogen, Big clouds of hydrogen, Big balls of hydrogen, stars, supernova, heavier elements like carbon, clouds of heavier elements, big balls of heavier elements, planets, life, humans”

Neil deGrasse Tyson on religion in science classrooms

This. So much this. I support freedom of religion! Believe whatever you want! Believe that the flood killed the dinosaurs and that the earth was made in seven days! I really do not care. That is of course not to say that all religious people believe that. They don’t. There is no ‘wrong’ way to be religious and the experience is very personal. I’m not here to judge the ‘rightness’ or ‘wrongness’ of your religion.

But there is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ in science.

It is okay to admit when we do not know things. Scientists have varying degrees of certainty and uncertainty on various things. That is fine. What is not fine is taking those gaps and just saying that ‘god(s) did it.’ That is not science.

And what’s even worse is ignoring very important parts of science that have enormous amounts of evidence and replacing them with a religious belief or story.

As an adult, if you do not want to ‘believe’ in science (what does that even mean? science is not about belief!) then do what you want! But don’t impede the next generation from learning about the universe.
